  1. Great barrier reef By Hayley Sinnatt

  2. What is the great barrier reef? • Washed by the warm waters of the South-West Pacific Ocean the perfect environment is created for the world's largest system of coral reefs.  The Great Barrier Reef is of such pristine condition that it was listed by the World Heritage Trust as a protected site and is therefore managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Authority to ensure that its beauty is maintained for many generations to come. • I think the great barrier reef is one of the most beautiful places in the world!!

  3. What is in the reef? • The reef contains over 2,900 reefs which includes 760 fringing reefs, and 300 corals. There are also 618 continental islands, which were once part of the mainland. As the world's largest coral reef ecosystem the Great Barrier Reef is home to about:1,500 species of fish 400 species of corals 4,000 species of molluscs 500 species of seaweed 215 species of birds 16 species of sea snake 6 species of sea turtles and some of the largest populations of dugong in the world!!!

  4. What dangerous animals are in the great barrier reef?? Some dangerous marine animals that live in the GBR are • Box Jelly Fish • Blue Ringed Octopus • Cone Shells • Lion Fish • Stone Fish • Sea Snakes • Stingrays

  5. WHERE IS THE GREAT BARRIER REEF?? • Great Barrier ReefMarine Park - • 345,400 sq.kmWorld Heritage Area - 348,000 sq.km

  6. Interesting facts • •Is the largest coral reef system • In the world • •Covers 344 000km2 in area • •Is approximately 2300 • Kilometres in length • •Extends from the northern tip • Of Queensland south to just • North of Bundaberg • •Is between 60 kilometres and • 250 kilometres in width • •Has an average depth of water • Of 35 metres in the Great • Barrier Reef lagoon

  7. Seagrass!! • Seagrasses are important in coastal marine areas. They are the main diet of dugong and green turtles and provide a habitat for many, much smaller marine animals, like prawns and fish, are commercially important. They also stabilise sediment, helping to keep water clear! • Dugong feeding trail in seagrass bed. Seagrasses are the only flowering plants in the sea. Australia has the highest number of seagrass species of any continent. Of some 60 seagrass species found worldwide, 30 species are found in Australia and 15 species are found in Queensland!!! • While there are over 500 species of algae, there are only 15 species of seagrasses on the Great Barrier Reef. Seagrasses differ from algae because they have seeds and fruits, rather than spores. Seagrasses also have separate roots, leaves and underground stems called rhizomes which form extensive networks below the surface. Algae rarely have roots below the surface.

  8. Some islands in the great barrier reef are • Haggerstone IslandHamilton IslandGreen Island • Fitzroy Island • Bedarra Island • Dunk Island • Orpheus Island • Magnetic IslandHayman Island • Daydream IslandLizard IslandPeppers Palm Bay • Long Island Resort • Brampton Island • Great Keppel Holiday Village. • Heron Island • Wilson Island Lady Elliot Island • Kingfisher BayTangalooma Island Resort

  9. Can we aloud to go fishing on the reef? • Fishing is not allowed in green national park zones, pink preservation or orange scientific zones. In other zones fishing is allowed. • The following animals are totally protected: • whales, porpoises, dolphins, dugong and turtles, clam, trumpet and helmet shells and female crabs!!
