  5. Sacraments important as physical, visible signs of God’s grace. • Many Protestants (methodists, evangelicals, quakersetc) say you can only know God through faith. There aren’t any objects, or people(eg “priests”), that can hold or administer God’s grace, apart from your faith. In the Old Testament, oil, water, sacred stones as altars were all used to show God’s presence in a special way. In the Last Supper, Jesus himself told us to consecrate the bread and wine as objects through which he would make himself present. I prefer to trust God through His Church & its rituals, rather than in my faith, which is unreliable. The world is a physical place, and God was born as Jesus in a physical body. So the physical world can be a way of transmitting his grace. I don’t know if my faith is good enough or not. How can I have peace if I keep wondering? I need physical signs of his presence. Do you agree with the protestant view? Explain, referring to some of the arguments in the bubbles.
