  2. French Occupation of Vietnam Ngo Dinh Diem (South Vietnam) Elections were supposed to be held to unite North and South Vietnam, but the U.S. sabotaged the elections and left Ngo Dinh Diem in charge of South Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh (North Vietnam)

  3. Domino Theory The Domino Theory was a term that Dwight Eisenhower used in a speech to describe the consequences if Communism was not contained.

  4. Eisenhower Sends Aid North Vietnamese: Viet Cong China Soviet Union

  5. JFK JFK increases the number of advisers, the United States is still not heavily involved in Vietnam and supports a coup (revolt) where Ngo Dinh Diem is killed. Kennedy is assassinated three weeks later.

  6. Lyndon B. Johnson Johnson’s “Great Society” and the idealism of the early 1960s was quickly turned sour when Johnson became more involved with Vietnam. He continued to send planes for bombing runs and ships.

  7. Gulf of Tonkin Incident The United States engaged North Vietnam forces twice on August 2nd and 4th, though the incident on August 4th may never have happened.

  8. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which gave the President power to take all measures necessary to subdue the Viet Cong and protect South Vietnam.

  9. Consequences for the United States • Weakened U.S. morale • Idealism of the 1960s lost • Around 60,000 U.S. casualties
