  7. Scriptures • Romans 3:23 • For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God • Philippians 3:13-14 • 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

  8. Scriptures (cont’d) • Proverbs 4:25 and 27 • “Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Do not swerve to the right or the left, keep your foot from evil” • Acts 20:24 • 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace. • 1 Corinthians 9:24 • 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

  9. Scriptures • Hebrews 12:1 • 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. • 2 Timothy 4:7 • 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

  12. Scriptures (cont’d) • Romans 10:9 • That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. • Romans 10:10 • For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

  13. Scriptures (cont’d) • John 1:12 • Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--

  14. Parenting

  15. Scriptures • 1 John 3 • 1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! • Psalm 103:13 • As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; • John 3:16 • For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life

  16. Scriptures (cont’d) • Proverbs 8:30-31 • Then I was constantly at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, 31 rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. • Isaiah 66:13 • 13 As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

  17. Scriptures (cont’d) • Matthew 7:11 • 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! • 1 John 4:19 • We love because he firstloved us.

  18. Scriptures (cont’d) • Hebrews 12:7-11 • 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

  19. So what? • Reading/memorizing Scripture is a good thing • Even when it feels like an empty ritual • Knowing Scripture increases ability to experience God in your everyday life • Knowing Scripture helps everyday life reveal Scripture.
