  3. Course Description • The purpose of this course is to provide students with the principles of SCUBA diving including diving equipment, diving skills, diving science, etc… Through practices in the swimming pool and ocean, the students’ skills and knowledge of diving will be trained and developed. The safety regulations of diving will be emphasized.

  4. Prerequisites • Swimming skills: • Survival swim for 10 min. • Finish 400 m in 10 min. • Underwater, swim 15 m on one breath with no push-off or dive.

  5. Prerequisites • Snorkeling skills: • Finish 800 m in 18 min. • Underwater, swim 18 m on one breath with no push-off. • Recover a 4.5 kg from 3m of water. • On the surface, transport a diver of equal size 37 m. • Bring a skin diver simulating unconsciousness to the surface from about 3m of water.

  6. Teaching Methods • Lectures with PowerPoint slides. In addition, DVD demonstration will also be included. This course requires swimming pool and field/ocean practice as well. Demonstration of SCUBA diving skill will be presented by the instructor/assistant instructors. • Both confine and open water training.

  8. Grading • Grades are determined by both lecture exams (50%) and swimming pool/field practices (50%).

  9. Class rules and reminder: • Attendance is important. More then two absence without reasonable excuses will result in failure to this course. • Completion of the course at the end of the semester will be certified as NAUI scuba diver.

  10. Class rules and reminder: • Students should possess his/her personal snorkeling instruments including mask, snorkel, boots, wet suit, and gear bag. • All students are equally responsible for the class expanse including tank fee and transportation.
