VARIABLES • Variable – Factors that can change in an experiment • Manipulated Variable – The variable that you purposely change and test. • Responding Variable – Factor that may change as a result of the manipulated variable. • Controlling Variable – Keeping all conditions the same except for the manipulated variable.

  5. Terms continued • Qualitative – Descriptions that do not use numbers. • Quantitative – Descriptions using numbers. Counting objects or measure them with standard units. • Inferring – Explaining or interpreting an observation or statement. • Predicting – Making an inference about a future event based on current evidence or past experience. • Classifying – Organizing objects and events into groups according to a system, or organizing idea. • Models – Pictures, diagrams, or other representations of objects or processes. • Measuring – Comparing an object or process to a standard.

Ways To Display Data • Data Table – is an organized arrangement of information in labeled rows and columns. • Bar Graphs – is a diagram in which data about separate but related items are represented by rectangular shapes called bars. • Line Graphs – is used to display data that show how one variable (the responding variable) changes in response to another variable (the manipulated variable). • Circle Graph – shows data as parts of a whole.
