  3. Defining Terms Periodicals: The terms magazine, journal, periodical, and serial are often used interchangeably. However, some distinctions can be made. Periodicals include newspapers and popular magazines, scholarly journals, and trade publications. The term periodical is generally applied to any publication that is issued periodically (weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.). Examples of periodicals available through SAC Library’s periodical collection

  4. Defining Terms Articles: Articles are published within periodicals and generally provide current (or more up-to-date) information on various topics that may not yet be available in books or reference sources. Examples of articles published in periodicals available through SAC Library’s periodical collection

  5. Types of Periodicals The table to the right outlines different types of periodicals, explains their varying characteristics, and provides examples. Depending on the nature or type of research you need to do, you will find certain kinds of periodicals more useful than others. Table created by Luis Pedroza, SAC Librarian

  6. Understanding Article Citations When reading articles, especially scholarly articles, you may find the author(s) citing or referencing other articles and information sources used in their research. Below is a sample article citation in the MLA format, including explanations for each of the citation elements. McGuire, Patricia. "Raising a Voice for Academe Under President Trump." Chronicle of Higher Education, vol. 63, no. 13, 18 Nov. 2016, p. A56. Academic Search Complete, http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=119554138&site=ehost-live. Accessed 18 Jan. 2017. Title of article Title of periodical Author Volume & issue number Publication date Title of database containing article Page # Title of periodical (cont.) Web link or URL Date article was accessed Knowing how to read and decipher citations not only clues you into the research used to substantiate the author’s claims but they can also point you to other useful information sources for your research.

  7. What periodicals does SAC Library subscribe to? In the case that you want to track down the full text of an article you have a citation for, you can use the library's List of Periodicals Index tool. It lets you know if the library provides access to a print and/or online version of the article. The video on the next slide demonstrates this process.
