  1. Unlock your past… The BIG History Lesson Coordinated by: Cheryl Natzmer

  2. You and your students are invited to use the Michigan Historical Museum as your classroom for a week-long study of Michigan history.

  3. The BIG History Lesson is a creative model for teacher-led, student centered learning within the museum environment. You design and lead a thematic unit of study tailored to the needs of your students and your teaching objectives.

  4. The museum provides an ideal setting for interdisciplinary, hands-on and object-based learning.

  5. Students talk with historians and learn about the daily lives of men, women and children in history through the objects they used. It’s all a part of the BIG History Lesson experience.

  6. Children get a behind-the-scenes look at the museum. Here archivist Mark Harvey shows students the original Michigan constitution.

  7. Teachers and museum staff plan a variety of learning experiences – including speakers, tours, discussions, individual and collaborative research. These students talk about French fur trading with a Voyageur.

  8. Time for free-choice learning is an important aspect of the model. These students are attracted to a construction diagram of the Mackinac Bridge.

  9. Students engage with historical materials by observing, journal writing, note-taking and sketching.

  10. Students work alone or in small groups to conduct research on topics that are of personal interest.

  11. Dressing up in period clothes and reenacting scenes from history lets students experience what life was like in the past.

  12. Playing games our ancestors enjoyed is also part of the fun.

  13. Students may try their hand at traditional crafts such as tin punching.

  14. Parent volunteers play an important role in modeling behavior and provide additional resources.

  15. At the end of each week, students demonstrate what they’ve learned through presentations, performances, or acting as junior docents. Here a group plays jeopardy with questions they’ve contributed.

  16. These students created puppets representing their favorite historical figures and staged a show as their culminating activity.
