Need to conduct a survey • The annual manufacturing surveys provides key measures of the structure of the manufacturing industry. • Principal purposes are: • To provide National Accounts with structural and commodity detail; • To provide data on industrial productive structure of the Brazilian economy and its evolution over time; • To provide external users with basic data by 3-digit industry • To provide data for market approach • To provide data for selection of product and weight definitions in the monthly system of industrial production indicators

Survey outputs • The key variables in the annual surveys: • PIA-EMPRESA • Revenue data; • Costs and various components detailed for the estimates of the intermediary consumption; • Number of employees and value of the salaries paid and social contribution cost; • Cost in the acquisition of fixed assets for the estimates of Capital Formation. • PIA-PRODUTO • By product categories of PRODLIST: • Sales value • Quantities produced and sold

  8. Statistical Unit • Enterprise: basic information unit • Local units: location, activity, few variables to serve as parameter for the distribution of the enterprise data

  9. Coverage • PIA-EMPRESA - Mining and manufacturing activities - business > 5 employees • PIA-PRODUTO - Mining and manufacturing activities - panel of business > 30 employees

Sample Design • PIA-EMPRESA • Sampling frame is stratified in two classes: • certainty stratum: all enterprises > 30 employees • sampled stratum: enterprises with 5 to 29 employees for which a random sampling without replacements is selected • PIA-PRODUTO • A cut-off sample taken from the Annual Mining and Manufacturing Survey (certainty stratum)

  12. Types of survey forms • PIA-EMPRESA • One form for the medium and large enterprises (in the certainty stratum) • A short form for the smaller ones (sampled stratum) • PIA-PRODUTO • One form

Level of data dissemination • PIA-EMPRESA • Data are available for the total of enterprises for Brazil and for some Federal States at 3 digit level; data are also available at 4-digit level to the certainty stratum for Brazil and Federal states. • PIA-PRODUTO • By Prodlist categories at National level and the 100 most important products by sales at Federal estates level.

  16. Method of collection • Decentralized data collection by the network of IBGE’s regional offices. The enterprise may choose to complete a paper form or eletronic form. The delivery of the form and reception of the answer may be done by the network of IBGE’s field offices or by internet (both the access and the delivery)
