  1. Statistics and Computers By Jordan Neuzil

  2. Statistics • Statistics is the mathematics of the collection, organization, and interpretation of numerical data, especially the analysis of population characteristics by inference from sampling.

  3. Statistics Today • Statistics play an important role with society today and thanks to computers, it makes everything completely possible. • There are statistics in businesses, the sports world, and even at your own house you could have statistics.

  4. Statistics Jobs • There are many jobs out there that require statistics. Many people don’t realize how many jobs are actually out there for this major • Sports Statistician, Statistical Engineer, Business Statistics, Financial Statistics, and many others.

  5. Significant Points • About 41 percent of statisticians work for Federal, State, and local governments; other employers include scientific research and development services and finance and insurance firms. • A master’s degree in statistics or mathematics is the minimum educational requirement for most jobs as a statistician.

  6. Significant Points • Employment of statisticians is projected to grow more slowly than average because many jobs that require a degree in statistics will not carry the title “statistician.” • Individuals with a degree in statistics should have favorable job opportunities in a variety of disciplines.

  7. How much does you make? • The average annual salary for statisticians in the Federal Government in non- supervisory, supervisory, and managerial positions was $81,262 in 2005, while mathematical statisticians averaged $91,446.

  8. How much does you make? • According to a 2005 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, starting salary offers for mathematics/statistics graduates with a bachelor’s degree averaged $43,448 a year.

  9. Sports Statistician • The main reason I am majoring in statistics is to become a Sports Statistician, because of how much you make out off college and because you get to go to all of the games that you attend for free.

  10. What are your professional duties? 1.Recording statistics as events happen 2. Auditing stats with play-by-play 3. Preparation of final stats for league records 4. Computer data entry 5. Serves as official scorer for both teams

  11. What are your professional duties? 6. Preparation of final and midgame summary reports for the media 7. Keep up to date on changes in statistical scoring rules 8. Involvement in resolution of disputed calls.

  12. What skills and academic training do you need? • Ability to add, subtract, divide in your head • Ability to write very legible numbers and letters • You must be able to check and double check your work all the time • Team work is essential • Ability to read and understand a technical statisticians guide and make split second judgments during the game

  13. Where do computer fit in? • An additional new growth area in sports statistics is the use of hands-on computers to record the actions directly at the game site. This has added computer operators and software technicians to the game site. Again, the demand for new workers is very limited.

  14. Where do computer fit in? • Also with computers, statistics are now used for things such as fantasy leagues in which stats are needed to be updated regularly and have to be correct. • Also with pages such as ESPN on the web, it is necessary for some statisticians to have a computer background so they can use the site more proficiently.

  15. Why are statistics necessary? • Without statistics, it would be hard for businesses to determine the amount of products to buy • Some companies would have any information on the age or range of groups that they could be dealing with their products.

  16. Why are statistics necessary? • Stadiums such as Jacob’s Field would have a hard time trying to keep up with the number of people attending the games, and the amount of people over the years. • People just want to know the facts that go around them every day. Like the price of oil and gas over the part 20 years.

  17. Why are statistics necessary? • Without statistics, sports wouldn’t have the same effect as it would now. Many teams would like to know how many completed pass a person has made or the amount of home runs that a person hit over the past year. Without this, our history of everything would be lost
