WP1 Objectives • Create an overview of the Japanese STI funding system to better understand, communicate and define targets in cooperation with Japan. • Compile a database of ongoing STI cooperation programs between European countries and Japan. • Map ongoing programs to unfold complementarities and recommend actions for coordination. • Show preferences of program owners with regard to future cooperation.

Inventoryof Japanese International STI Programme Ownersand Managers • Most funding programs are concentrated with the two large funding agencies attached to MEXT, JST and JSPS, and with NEDO attached to METI. • Several research institutions operate smaller mobility programs in their own science and technology sector. • The fact that MEXT’s STI budget accounts for the largest part of Japan’s overall STI expenditure is mirrored in the number of programs through institutions supported by MEXT. • The activities of independent administrative institutions not operating international STI programs concentrate on own research, promotion of science and technology in Japan as well as national programs.

Informative Report on Japanese STI FundingPolicy The reportgives an explanatoryoverview of theJapanese STI fundingpolicysystem, itsactors, theirinterrelations, the S&T basicplansandtheirimplementation. • Itservesas a basisfortheimplementation of the CONCERT-Japan projectandas a source of informationfortheestablishment of cooperationbetween Europe and Japan in general. • Publiclyavailable: http://www.concertjapan.eu/node/131

  6. Electronic Database on Existing Programmes for Analytical Purposes 1. General information on more than 40 STI cooperation programmes between Japan and 18 European countries including programme owner information and contacts. 2. Specific programme information relating to target scientific fields and instruments available for support, the eligibility of applicants as well as the evaluation procedure for the respective programme. 3. An assessment of the impact of the respective STI funding programme. 4. Intellectual property rights applying to the existing STI cooperation programmes.
