(HGA) • November 1, 2016 - Contract executed • Contractor Pre-Qualification • July 14, 2017 – RFQ issued • Four contractors deemed qualified • February 9, 2018 – low bid contract awarded to KBS, Inc. • April 26, 2018 – Groundbreaking Ceremony Virginia Department of Transportation

  6. Design Basics • Three-story structure, approx. 85,000 sqf • Must fit on existing property • Category 3 rating • Physical separation between VSP and VDOT • State-of-the-art Operations Center with Data Center • “Inspire innovation and collaboration and pay homage to the achievements of civil engineering and reflect a culture of service to our fellow citizens.” Virginia Department of Transportation

Other Challenges • Construction within an active VDOT complex • Fiber-optic connection to I-95 • 2 private easements • 1 railroad agreement • Wireless tower for VSP radio system • Funding • Designing a building that integrates with existing buildings both in scale and materiality. Lessons Learned • Visit other facilities • Carefully select architects, consultants, and contractors • Pre-qualify where possible • If possible, hire a systems integrator • Identify financial obligations of all partners • Once construction begins, resist temptation to change • Always consider the future • Technology and people Virginia Department of Transportation
