  2. FACTS Tanita is a pioneer in the development of BIA, an extremely reliable method for body composition analysis. It's fast, consistent, accurate and easy to use. Tanita Body Composition Analyzers help patients to understand what is going on inside their bodies by categorizing weight into muscle mass, water, and body fat. Tanita Body Composition Analyzers help patients with weight-related problems make better-informed decisions about their behavior. It helps them to see the effectiveness of their treatment program - especially relevant if obesity-related medication is part of the program. Tanita's detailed results and accurate reporting will also improve patient compliance, improving health outcomes.

  3. General Instructions for Accurate Measurement • The body composition analyzer is designed for standard and athletic individuals. However, certain individuals may not receive accurate results, as they fall outside the population for which Tanita equations were developed. • • Because body composition analyzers uses a minor electric current to measure impedance (electrical resistance), best results will be observed when measurement is taken in bare feet. • • Poor contact between the feet and electrodes may produce an error message. Heels should be placed directly on top of the posterior electrodes, while the front part of the foot needs to be in contact with the anterior electrodes. Also, make sure the soles of the feet are free of excess dirt, as this may act as a barrier to the mild current. • If there are calluses on the soles of the feet, or an individual is wearing thin nylons, accurate measurement may still be possible. Place 0.5cc of saline or water in the center of each electrode. This will act as a conductive material, and may allow the current to pass freely through a thin barrier. • • Keep the electrodes clean by wiping them with disinfectant. • • Fluctuations in hydration status may affect body composition results.

  4. The Bio-Metric Scale can be found in clinics and hospitals around the world is trusted for their accuracy, quality, and reliability is essential for assessing the risk of developing obesity-related medical conditions, and can also be used preventatively, educating patients about the importance of maintaining healthy fat levels for life-long good health. body fat monitors for total health and fitness.

  5. Why Measure Body Fat? • Measuring Body Fat Is Important for Determining Fitness • Not All Pounds Are the Same …and

  6. Appearances Can Be Deceiving Men A, B and C are exactly the same height. A and B have the same weight, and C weighs considerably more. For his height C appears to be fat. But after analyzing body fat levels, B and C have acceptable percentages while A has above the recommended range and is at a higher health risk.

  7. Bio-impedance analysis (BIA) measures body composition electronically. Electronically Measuring: • Fat Percentage • Water Percentage • Muscle Mass • Bone density • Fat Free Mass • Impedance Body Composition Analyzer monitor sends a series of electronic signals up into the trunk of your body, through your bare feet.

  8. There are some conditions that might cause skewed results or an "Error" reading in the displaying results. These conditions may include: • Hydration fluctuations which may result from alcohol or food consumption, sleep, intense exercise, medication or pre-menstruation. • A very full bladder. • Severe calluses on heels or soles of feet (about 1/400 people tested). • Unclean foot pads may interfere with conductivity. • Nylons interfere with conductivity.

  9. There are people for whom the BIA is not appropriate? • People with pacemakers are advised not to use the monitors. Although there are no known health risks, this is a precaution that is advocated by all manufacturers of BIA. • Additionally, accuracy is an issue for certain categories of people, but the units may still be used to monitor trends and accurately show degree of change. They include: • Pregnant women • People who exceed the weight capacity of the scale (models vary) and/or exceed 75% body fat • Professional athletes and bodybuilders.

  10. Changes in hydration levels can affect readings. If your client is dehydrated, they will likely experience a higher than normal reading. If over-hydrated, they could experience a slightly lower reading. To obtain the greatest accuracy and repeatability from body composition analyzer, HLS suggests the following protocol. Take readings at least 3 hours after rising, eating a large meal, or exercising. Take readings once a week at the same time of day under the same conditions. (Note: Taking readings more than once per week is not beneficial since body fat does not change from day to day.) Average your readings for the month. Compare averages from month to month. By following this format, hydration fluctuations throughout the month will average out, and you will be able to better assess any real change in your body fat percentage over time.

  11. Recommended Body Fat • Healthy body fat ranges differ between men and women. • For women it’s 30% • For men it’s 10%

  12. Tools HLS uses the Tanita education sheet to help clients understand their tapes and as a visual reminder of the importance of knowing their health in numbers. This informational handout contains general information regarding body fat, muscle and water, as well as a detailed description of the body composition print-out.
