  2. The Rhetorical Square • Begins with Aristotle’s Triangle: SPEAKER AUDIENCE TOPIC

  3. The Square ETHOS Speaker – Persona - Voice What will convey your credibility? How will you show that you are knowledgeable about the topic? PATHOS What evidence can be found within the topic that provides reasons to agree with you? Topic Audience How will you appeal to the emotions of your targeted audience? LOGOS What do you want to accomplish or convey? What result do you want? Purpose

Ethos An undocumented worker SPEAKER: We want fair treatment – I work and live in the same conditions as you Other undocumented workers Logos AUDIENCE: Our labor provides goods and services at prices that are affordable TOPIC: Immigration Rally Our kids can be taken away if we’re deported Pathos PURPOSE: Convince others to march

Ethos An unemployed citizen SPEAKER: Immigrants are taking our jobs – look at me, I don’t have employment Undocumented workers Logos AUDIENCE: Our labor provides goods and services at prices that are affordable TOPIC: Immigration Rally We have legal avenues for immigrants to enter the country Pathos PURPOSE: Keep immigrants from entering without documents & deport those who are here without documents

Rhetorical Square: Scaffold for Analysis INPUT: • Use the rhetorical square as a scaffold to analyze a primary source article. • Read rhetorically: read for purpose, structure, and how details are marshaled within the structure to support and develop the purpose OUTPUT:Use the Rhetorical Square to assist you in answering the Generic Text-Based Dependent Questions. Then, design an oral presentation for the class to discuss the article.
