  2. Requirements for Completion • The entirety of the course will take approximately 4 hour to complete • A certificate for 1 Contact Hour will be awarded and submitted to unit educators by you

  3. Objectives • Identify risk factors for development of pressure ulcers • Identify prevention strategies to prevent pressure ulcers • Acquire a basic understanding of how skin layers function • Identify pressure ulcer stages

  4. Competence • Once you complete the online course you will need to complete the Skin and Risk Scenarios. • All nurses and Patient Care Techs should be checked off for competence in assessing skin. • Floor nurse educators should be responsible for this competence.

  5. Documentation All pressure ulcers MUST have a wound nurse consult order entered (under consult-wound care). If you are unsure whether the wound is pressure or not, talk to the patient. If this does not lead to an answer, describe what you see, and be sure to consult the wound nurse for determination if it meets the criteria for pressure. If admitted from another facility (nursing home, etc) call to find out how it started.

  6. Documentation • Please document all interventions • i.e.: waffle cushion, wedge, heel elevation boots, etc.

Next Steps • You are now ready to start the Medline University Competency Course • The Sunrise Lower Deck Computer Lab is available for your use. • Access to the room is: 345 • Directions to accessing and creating an account are on the next slide • You may want to print that slide • Link to Medline University follows • After completion of the Medline Course print off the certificate and give to your unit educator.

  8. Special Notes: The course opens in a new window, so you may have problems with a pop up blocker. If the course doesn't open when you click the Launch link, try holding down your Control Key (bottom left on the keyboard - Ctrl). A new window should open with the course.If the course opens, but not all buttons are visible ('next', 'back', etc), please then use the F11 button to make the course appear as full.

  9. Getting Started on Medline University Step 1: Go to www.medlineuniversity.com Step 2: Click on Create an Account. (If you already have an account, go straight to Step 4.) Step 3: Fill in required information (denoted by *) to complete registration process. After you select Missouri as your state, scroll down the facility list to select Hannibal Regional Hospital as your facility. Then click Create an Account at the bottom of the page. Step 4: Click on the Programs tab from the menu at the top of the screen.

Step 5: From the icons along the top, select Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program Step 6: Underneath Online Courses and Tests, select the Program Course based on your position: CNAs: Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program: Course for Nursing Assistants RNs/LPNs: Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program: Course for Nurses Step 7: Click Launch to start the course Step 8: To get your certificate after passing the test, click My Registered Courses, then click Certificate button. Click on the printer icon next to the course name to open and print the certificate.

  11. Link to Medline University https://www.medlineuniversity.com Have your nursing license number available for account registration. Remember to print off the certificate and give it to your educator.
