Introduction • The VFW, or Veterans of Foreign Wars has roots dating as early as 1899 of its services. Its goals are to provide for the veterans of foreign wars in the United States in any different means.
Mission Statement • “To foster camaraderie among Untied States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military, and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.”
In what ways has the VFW contributed to their mission statement? The VFW has contributed to the veterans in many different ways. For instance, they had pushed and voiced for the Veterans Administration, which they were provided. They created the GI Bill for the twentieth century. They ultimately re-wrote the GI Bill for the twenty-first century. They developed the national cemetery system. Not to mention, the VFW helped fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Woman in Military Service memorials and became the first veterans’ organization to contribute to build a new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial.
How do they contribute today? The VFW contributes in many different ways in today’s society as well. They provide over 3 million dollars in college scholarships and saving bonds, which they provide to students each year. They have an accumulative of about 11 million hours of community service, which they provide, to our nation every year. They actively voice their opinions to the president’s cabinet. Not only do they provide to veterans but they also contribute to active members. For instance, the VFW recently put on a massive baby shower for future mothers who are either in or currently have a spouse in the marines.
Membership Eligibility • If you are a U.S. citizen who has served honorably in the Armed Forces and has served in an overseas conflict, you are eligible to become a member of the VFW • You can join even if you are still serving in the military. Membership • 2.1 million members • demographics- over 40% of veterans and active members live in the South
How do we attract new members? Focus on educating people about the benefits of joining the VFW, such as: • The camaraderie and fellowship that comes with being part of the nation’s largest group of combat veterans • Assistance securing the benefits you’re entitled to as a veteran • Discounts on numerous insurance and health care plans • The money that can be saved on SAT/ACT college test preparation, travel and financial services, real estate and mortgage services, health care services, computers, identity theft protection, haircuts, and veteran employment assistance
How do we raise money? • Hold local meetings at town halls and veteran centers • Musical concerts. Toby Keith (Country Music superstar) is a strong supporter of our troops • California, Florida, Texas, and New York have the most registered veterans; hold massive exhibitions in the larger cities of these states
