  1. PARCA at NSIDC DAAC Where we are so far and where we might go Mark Parsons 25 April 2001

  2. History • Program for Arctic Regional Climate Assessment: 25 investigators working to understand the Greenland Ice Sheet • PARCA PIs agreed to make their data available through their web sites by March 2001 • PIs to submit metadata to NSIDC • NSIDC to build “jump page” pointing to all PARCA data sites • NSIDC created a “godawful” form to facilitate metadata submission PoDAG XVIII

  3. Submission Status • Bromwich & Chen: Modelled Precipitation • Davis, et al.: Elevation Change of the Southern Greenland Ice Sheet from 1978-88 • Abdalati: Ice Sheet Melt Characteristics • Steffen & Box: Greenland Climate Network AWS Data • Thomas, et al.: Ice Velocities Around the 2000-meter Traverse • Thomas, et al.: Mass Balance Estimates by Comparing Ice Discharge Across the 2000-m Traverse • Hamilton & Whillans: Ice Sheet Mass Balance Using Precision GPS • Krabill: Ice Surface Elevations from NASA ATM Airborne Lidar PoDAG XVIII

  4. NSIDC Project Status • Data jump page available at <nsidc.org/NASA/PARCA> • Single catalog entry in NSIDC catalog listed under many subject areas • Submitted one überDIF for all the PARCA data to GCMD • Implemented tracking script to measure success of page PoDAG XVIII

  5. Issues • Few submissions • Need to do some outreach • Will investigators be able and willing to support the data? • Should NSIDC take over these data for longer term archival? PoDAG XVIII

  6. Very rough cost estimate for archival • Qualifiers: • based only on the eight data sets • some missing ones bigger and more complex • only considers initial cost of ingest, documentation, etc. • does not consider ongoing maintenance and support • assumes active support from Pis to develop documentation • Consider low and high levels of service: primary difference is level of documentation and user services review PoDAG XVIII

  7. Handwaving cost estimate PoDAG XVIII
