  2. Guy De Maupassant Guy de Maupassant- was a popular 19th-century French Writerand considered one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protégé of Flaubert, Maupassant's stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient, effortless dénouement. Many of the stories are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s and several describe the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught in the conflict, emerge changed. He also wrote six short novels. Born: 5 August 1850 Died: 6 June 1893 (aged 42) Nationality : French

  3. Setting: Beleaguered Paris when it was suffering the pangs of hunger. • Characters : • Monsieur Morissot • Monsieur Sauvag • Soldiers

  4. TWO FRIENDS Beleaguered Paris was suffering the pangs of hunger. Everyone was willing to eat anything. On January morning, Monsieur Morissot went to a café when he suddenly came face to face with an old acquaintance, Monsieur Sauvage, a fishing crony. So, when they met again they decided that every Sunday they would have fishing and meet his, jolly little man friend, Monsieur Sauvage, after spending half the day side by side rod in hand and feet dangling over the water. A genuine friendship had developed between the two men. These two had mutual understanding and appreciation.

Untill, one day the two friends decided to go fishing, since Morissot had a friend Colonel Dumoulin they get there with no trouble since Colonel Dumoulin gave them the password and the two friends promise that no one will know the password the two friends directly enter to the village where the fishing area is there. When the two friends enjoying getting some fish they shook with terror at the sound of footsteps behind them they turned their heads and so closed beside them with four tall men, armed and bearded.

  6. A shaggy giant astride chair told them that he will shoot and capture the two friends if they will not tell them the password. They stood silently side by side with terror since they promise to the Colonel not to tell the password to anyone. Then the officers shoot them both. Morissot and Sauvage said their goodbyes. Sauvage feel forward like a log. Morissot tumbled across his friend. The four mens carried their bodies and dropped it to the river. Blood floated down the river. Then the officer said, it’s the fish turn now.
