  • Proposal Development Finding Aid for NSF – SSRI Website

  • Consult colleagues that have had success with the program – examples on SSRI website

  • Meet with your mentor early and create a plan for completing tasks leading up to the submission deadline

    • Select Program Announcement

    • Select Appropriate Division and Program

    • Check PA for earliest start date

    • Title – Should begin with

      • “DISSERTATION RESEARCH:” (Biological Sciences)

      • “Doctoral Dissertation Research:” (Social, Behavioral, Economic Sciences)

    • List Mentor as PI and Student as Co-PI (Change PI option)

    • Personnel – make sure all zeros in this section

    • Delete student from budget (add/remove senior personnel button)

    • Most items will fall under Travel or Other

    • Work closely with grant staff in your department to develop your budget

    • F&A Costs – are now applicable on DDIG/DDRIG proposals. Duke’s current rate is 57% unless your research will take place off campus.

  • Budget Justification

    • A narrative description of the numbers in your budget

    • Work with grant staff

    • SBE: page limit varies
