    1. Freshman Seminar Art Quest Using the Resources at the Metropolitan Museum of Art www.metmuseum.org

    2. Student Instructions Go to www.metmuseum.org Find a piece of art that exhibits character traits you embody. Print the selection making sure you include, if possible, the name of the piece, the artist, the year created, the medium, etc. You must use complete sentences to tell me how the art exemplifies you.

    3. Student Choices Tennis at Newport George Bellows I think aspects of this painting can be related to my personality, as the scene takes place outdoors where I like to spend time and at a social gathering which reflects my love for interacting with friends and going out. Also the colors include both bright greens, my favorite color, and darker greens, which in a way can represent my balance between time to get serious and accomplish things with my time to have fun and experience things. Bamboo and Rocks Yuan Dynasty This represents my Chinese heritage. The following information came from the Met website; These noble plants impart a heightened sense of reality that approaches portraiture.

    4. Student Choices Panel with Censing Angels French I love stained glass-especially the beautiful colors. The Steeplechase, Coney Island Milton Avery This piece of art depicts me because I enjoy amusement parks and roller coasters. The person staring at the roller coaster would be me. He is looking at the long line to get on the ride, the part I dont like about roller coasters.

    5. Student Choices View of Collioure and the Sea Henri Matisse This piece says something to me because I enjoy exploring the seashore and forest, as in this curious painting. David and Goliath 629-630 Byzantine This silver plate represents me because just like the picture of David fighting Goliath Im not scared to accept a challenge bigger than me or one that I might not be able to handle. So I think I am brave and courageous just like David.

    6. One of the purposes of the Freshman Seminar program is character education with the intent to create a smooth transition from early adolescence to adulthood as a student at Wayne Valley High School. Students discuss strategies for character development including the following character traits: kindness, integrity, citizenship, determination, responsibility, respect, empathy, justice, leadership, independence, self-worth, curiosity, hard work, courtesy, courage and athleticism. The art they chose represents these character traits and more. And as they continue to use the website for additional selections, as well as the Timeline of Art History, they will become more comfortable and able to use the information for all of their classes, especially English and World History, achieving success as the whole student.

    7. Second Metropolitan Museum Lesson: Character Study using sailing adventure stories culled from the National Geographic Adventure magazine at www.NATIONALGEOGRAPHIC.COM and sailboat paintings culled from the Mets website. Students will read Learning the Ropes on Renegade, Lost at Sea, and Sailing the Wind. Students will find a painting representing some aspect of one of the stories. Students will explain, in one good paragraph, how the painting shows character traits exhibited in the reading selection.
