7. The sandwich • Did you know that many words in English language are really the names of interesting people who lived in the past? For example, a long time ago there was a certain English earl who loved to play cards. One day when he was in the middle of an exciting game of cards he felt hungry. Since he did not want to waste time at the dinner table, he asked his host for a sliceof beef between two slices of bread. Everyone thought that this new way of eating was a wonderful invention. This new invention soon became a custom and was called a sandwich. You can probably guess how it got the name….the man was the Earl of Sandwich . • Sandwich is a small place in the southeast of England. • When a man's name is used as a common word we are really paying a great compliment to his memory. Can you think of other examples like this one?
