FRHSD Learning Center vs. Academy Learning Centers: • Four year programs of ACADEMIC STUDY offered to a selected group of highly motivated students who demonstrate interest and abilities in a particular field of study. • Targeted courses on an advanced level/advanced placement or college level work. • Highly academic learning community. Academies: • Four year programs of specialized coursework and experiences for all students who have a particular CAREER INTEREST. • Integrate career and technical courses, in addition to the traditional academic curriculum. • Career oriented program. Apply up to 2 programs

Monmouth County Vocational School District (MCVSD) Highly specialized, small career academies focused on providing a rigorous program for students with an interest in pursuing careers in respective areas. 5 Options: Allied Health & Sciences, Biotech, High Tech, Communications, MAST Apply only to 1 program

Tip #3: Review application and acceptance procedures • Many of the schools have different application procedures and requirements • Your child can apply to: • 1 MCVSD School • Any 2 of the FRHSD Learning Centers and Academies • Acceptances: • MCVSD- 1 student from each sending district in Monmouth County- then from a pool of applicants. • FRHSD- from FRHSD pool of applicants.

  12. Tip #3: Review application and acceptance procedures • MCVSD Deadline for applications: December 12, 2014 • MCVSD Acceptances: Four weeks after exam has been completed (exam date-January 24th). • Students will be selected based upon the following criteria: 100 point scale (75 point minimum score required); 15 points each grade (7, 8), 35 points each math and language arts entrance exam scores. The highest scoring qualified applicants will be offered admission. You may apply to one MCVSD school. GPA: • 7th Grade (Final) =15 Total Possible: 100 • 8th Grade (1st Quarter) =15 Minimum score for Admission: 75 Admission Exam • Math =35, Writing/Lang. Arts =35

  13. Tip#3: Review Application and Acceptance Procedures • Access application at www.frhsd.com on October 6th • FRHSD Deadline for applications is October 31st • 10/6/14 Online Application Opens: 8th graders who are zoned to attend a FRHSD school in September, 2015 may begin their online applications). • 10/31/14 Application Deadline: applications will be frozen and considered complete (except for essays and personal statements) at 11:59PM. • 11/5/14 Forms Due: all forms (parental permission, interview permission, FPAA audition permission) must be postmarked or faxed by this date. • 11/14/14Essay/Personal Statement Deadline: all essays and personal statements in the online application system will be frozen and considered complete at 11:59PM. • 12/1/14Exam Registration: entrance examination registration materials will be available through the on-line application system on this date. • 12/6/14 Entrance Examination: the learning center and Computer Science Academy entrance examination will take place at Freehold Township High School. Snow date is tentatively 12/13/14. • 12/12/14 Recommendation Deadline: all online recommendations must be filed by 11:59PM. Any required paper recommendations must be postmarked by this date. • 2/20/15 First Notification: applicants may log in to review decisions on their applications on or about this date. We will alert all applicants of the availability of decisions via e-mail.

  14. Tip#4: Don’t miss the deadlines • Deadlines approaching quickly for applications • Please reference handout • Contact schools directly or visit their websites • Teacher Recommendations • Students should contact teachers ASAP if they know they are applying to a school that requires a recommendation. • Provide teachers with information that the school is requesting and the due date for recommendations.

  15. Tip#5: Be sure you and your child are committed if you’re applying to MCVSD, Learning Center, Academy • There are limited spots for Colts Neck students at these schools, please consider this― before you apply. • “If you get in and decline the acceptance, that spot does not go to another Colts Neck student, it goes to someone in the ‘pool’.” • All schools are selective. • Going to a school outside of CNHS can be a logistical challenge.

  16. Tip#6: Attend MCVSD Open Houses to obtain an application • You must attend the Open Houses to obtain an application and apply to: • Academy of Allied Health & Science • Biotechnology High School • Communications High School • High Technology High School • Marine Academy of Sciences and Technology • Applications are color coded with raised seals.  • Open houses are typically about 2 hours.

  17. Tip#7: Consider Scheduling and Logistics if your student is involved in Athletics/Activities • For students attending FRHSD Learning Centers and Academies- your student will do all of their sports/activities at the high school they attend. (ex. If your child is attending the Culinary Arts Academy, he/she will play sports at Freehold High School.) • For students attending MCVSD- your student will come back to CNHS for sports. Please note that “clubs” meet during the school day.
