  2. The job Interview • A job interview is a face to face meeting between you and the employer • It is usually the last and most important step of the job seeking process • An Interview will usually last between 15 and 30 minutes.

  3. The Employer • The employer wants to know that you have the SKILLS for the job • They will also be looking at your personality and how you interact with the panel or interviewer. They will want to ensure you are fit well within their team and with other colleagues

  4. Before the job: • Practice your interview skills, do this with a friend or family member • Research the company – this is a must. Do not go in without first knowing the basics, i.e. when the company was formed, what is the companies specialty, how many staff etc • Gather required materials i.e. If they ask you to bring another copy of your CV • Ensure you look the part – think about your appearance and the clothes you intent to wear. • Think about ways to manage your nerves. Have an early night before.

  5. During the interview • Listen carefully to the interviewee. If you don’t understand him/her make sure you ask that the question is repeated. • Speak clearly • Watch your body language;- don’t slouch in your chair- don’t fidget

  6. Common Questions • Tell me about yourself • Why do you want this position • Tell me what you know about this company • Have you done anything to further your experience • What is your greatest strength • What is your biggest weakness • Do you have any questions (always have one question)

  7. After the interview • If you are successful, you will be told shortly after your interview. • If you are not successful, you may or may not hear from the employer. • It is good practice to phone the employer if you have not heard and ask for feedback as to how you interviewed. • This is also a good time to review your experience and think of ways you can improve for the future.

Practical Exercise Break into groups and practice the following questions to then present to the class. • Practical Exercise: • Interviewer - is the person employing you.Interviewee - is the person applying for the job i.e., you. • Interviewer: • What attracted you to this position? • Why do you want this job? • Why do you want to work specifically for us? • What do you see as your strengths? • What do you see as your weaknesses? • Where do you see yourself in five years time? • How do you like to work? (are you organized, efficient, casual) • What can you bring to this position? • Why should we employ you? • What do you do outside work? • Is there anyone you couldn’t work with? • Do you work well in a group/team setting? • How do you respond to stressful or conflicting situations? • Interviewee: • What are the most important qualities you as an employer are looking for? • Why do you think people like working here? • Is there anything you think I should know that I've forgotten to ask? • Can you tell me more about the culture of the organization • Any other questions you may have • It is not advised to ask questions about salary, working hours, overtime etc unless the employer raises this.
