Fourth Brother says that Third Sister first words aren’t the opening they had originally planned.

The author adds excitement by having Paul disappear and the others search around frantically to find him. 8. Why do you think Fourth Brother included the part about Second Sister only liking boys who speak Chinese? To make the story they are telling sound more convincing, since Paul probably already know what Second Sister is like.

No, Paul is embarrassed because he likes Second Sister and was surprised to overhear that she likes him. 10. What details does the author include that show the conversation between Paul and the others is awkward? There are several long periods of silence, Paul’s sister pokes him when he doesn’t say anything, Paul clears his throat and swallows before speaking. 11. How does the author show that Fourth Brother has a sense of humor? The author has him think that Paul’s clearing his throat is a sign that frog have “set up housekeeping with his tonsils.”

Do you think Paul understands why the others have laughter in their eyes? Why? No, he probably thinks they are laughing at his question when they are really laughing that their plan worked. 14. What does Third Sister’s comment, “I hope so” tell you about the plan? Third Sister and Fourth Brother don’t just want to make fun of their sister, they really hope she and Paul become friends.

An interjection can be followed by either a comma or an exclamation point depending on how strong a feeling is expressed. Example: Oops, I just spilled some ketchup. Oh no! The tablecloth is ruined! Task: Create a list of interjections with a partner.

When the speak comes first use a comma before the quotation. Use commas to separate most quotations from the rest of the sentence. Place end punctuation inside the quotation marks.
