  4. TEAM OMEGA ARISE!!!!!!!!

  5. Using MechEng Workshop The Department of Aeronautics has arranged for a course to be held in the Mechanical Engineering Student Workshop, offering basic introductory training focusing on the use of general workshop machines, such as lathes, mills and drills. The duration of the course is 2 consecutive days. After completing the course, users will have enough basic training to be authorised to use the workshop machinery in the Mechanical Engineering Student Workshop during 'free-to-access' timetabled slots throughout the week. For further information, please visit; http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/aeronautics/local/hs/workshopcourse Please note; 1.       The course is open to PG students and 3rd/4th year UG students. 2.       Places are limited 3.       The date of the course (3rd and 4th Jan 2012)

  6. Approaching your project Just 1…..Rockets Teejay sadly is not on a team but let us see how he would approach this kind of project. So Teejay any bright ideas.

  7. Break it down High Altitude Balloon Consists of a: Balloon filled with Helium Parachute Cords Payload Bay

  8. Balloon Understanding your balloon – give it a cuddle (POP) Lifting weight : will this affect you ascent rate, maximum altitude ? Price

  9. Parachute Material Descent rate: dependent on size, shape, number of cord lines, number of parachutes, Possible to make it directional ?

  10. Chord When your balloon bursts very important. Stiff/ Stretchy and if so how long should it be ?

  11. Payload When all is said and done this is the most complex and important part of the project . Structure : Outer material : Strong, Light, Insulated ? Size/Dimensions : Streamline of Bluff Internal material: Insulation is important Arrangement: Camera, GPS module

  12. Payload When all is said and done this is the most complex and important part of the project . Electronics Central processing unit: Arduino, Raspberry Pie GPS module: Range/power, reliability, directional, how it works, ground equipment, cost, accuracy. Camera: Type, Picture/Video, Storage, Quality, combine with GPS ?

  13. Other Considerations What happens if you lose it ? What if it falls in to the sea What if it hit France (if you have a mobile phone you can call it) ? Loads more but have to finish this presentation before 6…. http://ukhas.org.uk/general:beginners_guide_to_high_altitude_ballooning http://randomsolutions.co.uk/Random_Aerospace/Welcome.html http://ukhas.org.uk/guides:faq

  14. So how will you do it Split up the project and certain amounts of people tackle different parts Split up the project and tackle each part all together in joint team effort on each part Hakunamatata it will all work out

  15. Ultimately JUST ENJOY and I WISH YOU LUCK This is your project you complete it how you see fit, you can take any advice we offer or ignore us and build some epic never seen before monstrosity
