  2. Boron’s basic info • Boron is a metalloid. • It’s atomic number is 5. • It has 5 protons and electrons. • It’s mass is 11. • The symbol is B. • It is in group 13 and in period 2.

  3. This is boron

  4. This is the boron atom

  5. Boron’s physical properties • Atomic Mass Average: 10.811 • Boiling Point: 4275K 4002°C 7236°F • Coefficient of lineal thermal expansion/K-1: 5E-6 • Conductivity • Electrical: 1.0E-12 106/cm ΩThermal: 0.274 W/cmk • Density: 2.34g/cc @ 300K • Description: • Yellow-brown non-metallic crystal. • Elastic Modulus: • Bulk: 320/GPa

  6. Boron’s chemical properties • Electrochemical Equivalent: 0.1344g/amp-hr • Electron Work Function: 4.45eV • Electronegativity: 2.04 (Pauling); 2.01 (Allrod Rochow) • Heat of Fusion: 50.2kJ/mol • Incompatibilities: • Ionization Potential • First: 8.298 • Second: 25.154 • Third: 37.93

  7. The uses • Boron is used in pyrotechnics and flares to produce a green color. • Boron has also been used in some rockets as an ignition source. • Boron-10, one of the naturally occurring isotopes of boron, is a good absorber of neutrons and is used in the control rods of nuclear reactors. • Also as a radiation shield • And as a neutron detector. • Boron filaments are used in the aerospace industry because of their high-strength and lightweight.

  8. Boron'shistory • Boron was discovered by Joseph-Louis Gay-Lussac and Louis-Jaques Thénard. • It than was refined by an English chemist by the name Humphry Davy in 1808

  9. What is boron made of • The most important boron compound is sodium borate pentahydrate (Na2B4O7·5H2O). • The second most important compound is boric acid (H3BO3), • Sodium borate decahydrate (Na2B4O7·10H2O), better known as borax, is the third most important boron compound.
