Russia Leaves the Great War Causes of 1917 Revolutions • Incompetence of Tsar Nicholas II • Romanovs were the ruling family in Russia for over 300 years • Nicholas II—Tsar of Russia—weak ruler • WWI had drained Russia’s resources (no medicine or weapons) • Nicholas II went to the front lines to lead military (inept leader) • Wife Alexandra (granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England) left in charge—was never well liked by the Russian people • Wife Alexandra depended on a Russian holy man named Rasputin (the mad monk) • He eased the suffering of Alexis (her son) who had hemophilia • Rasputin led her to make bad decisions

Russia Leaves the Great War Causes of 1917 Revolutions • The March Revolution • The Duma (Russian Legislature) set up a provisional government and began drafting a constitution while continuing to fight against Germany • Troops were deserting, peasants wanted land, city workers wanted food which was scarce.

Russia Leaves the Great War Causes of 1917 Revolutions • The November Revolution • Lenin and the Bolsheviks promised the people “Peace, Land, and Bread” • They attacked the provisional government and overthrew it. • The Bolsheviks set up a new government in Moscow and took the name “Communists” led by Lenin • They imprisoned and then executed the majority of the Romanov family including the czar and his wife and children.
