  2. Whaling • injuries and death were common to almost every voyage • Whaleboats would be launched into the water • Whales have acute hearing, so it was important to approach quietly

  3. Catching the Whale • Harpoon, known to crews as the "whale iron," and it was used to fasten the whale to the whaleboat

  4. Weapons used • Harpoon Guns • Bomb Lances (which contained a gunpowder charge and time fuse that triggered an explosion deep within the whale's body) • Darting Guns

  5. Purpose • Sperm oil : light, rapid machinery, high quality soap • Baleen: Buggy whips; Carriage springs; Corset stays; Fishing poles; Hoops for women's skirts
