  2. Frank Lloyd Wright • Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect. • One of his most famous building is called Fallingwater as shown on the right. • Another one of his famous buildings was the Robie House in Chicago which is shown next to Wright.(upper right)

  3. Thomas Jefferson • Thomas Jefferson, as you know him, was a famous president. But, he was also a amazing architect. • As you know the most famous building he designed was Monticello. • He also designed the original buildings at U.V.a.

  4. Thomas Jefferson (cont.) It is unlikely that most people upon hearing the name Thomas Jefferson, immediately think of architecture, yet his contributions as an architect are immeasurable. At the time of Jefferson's birth in 1743, no American school or college offered architectural training. Formal education offerings, during this era, were deeply rooted in the classics. In his early years, Jefferson learned from his father, Peter Jefferson, farming, surveying, and horsemanship. At age nine he was sent to board in a small private school, where he was thoroughly indoctrinated as a correct classical scholar, first under the tutelage of the Reverend William Douglas, then with the Reverend James MauryBy the time he was ready to enter college, Thomas Jefferson was well versed in Greek, French, Latin, Italian, and Spanish.

  6. Le Corbusier • Le Corbusier was a Swiss architect, designer, urbanist, writer and painter, famous for being one of the pioneers of what now is called Modern Architecture or the International style. He was born in Switzerland and became a French citizen in his thirties.

  7. Ludwig Mies Van DerRohe • Ludwig Mies van derRohe, along with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of Modern architecture. Mies, like many of his post World War I contemporaries, sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created an influential 20th century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces.

  9. Walter Adolph Georg Gropius • Walter Adolph Georg Gropius was a German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School who, along with Ludwig Mies van derRohe and Le Corbusier, is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture.

  10. Charles and Ray Eames • Charles and RayEames were American designers, who worked in and made major contributions to modern architecture and furniture. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art and film.

  12. Henry Hobson Richardson • Henry Hobson Richardsonwas a prominent American architect of the 19th century. His work left a significant impact on Boston, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Albany, and Chicago, among other cities. The style he popularized is named for him: Richardsonian Romanesque.
