  2. Apartheid- The Legal System A system of legal racial segregation (separation) enforced by the National Party government of South Africa (1948-1990). The system began with the discovery of gold and diamonds in the early 1900’s.
  3. Population of South Africa White South Africans Black South Africans White South Africans (Afrikaans) comprised about 5% of the population. Controlled 87% of the land. Counted on Black labor to support the economy. Black South Africans (Africans) comprised 95% of the population. Only opportunity for survival and employment lay in the Afrikaaner districts.
  4. Black African Townships or Homelands Confined to townships or homelands (compulsory). Needed Passes to get a job or to leave the township. Violation of law to leave homeland without permission.
  5. Legal Segregation All township residents were subject to search and seizure at anytime. Immorality Act (1950-1985) a law that forbid interracial marriages and romantic relationships between whites and blacks. Bantu Education was to promote racial myth and to ensure and inferior education and a servant class.
  6. The End of Apartheid A South African anti-apartheid activist, revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first to be elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. De Klerk announced that he would repeal discriminatory laws and lift the 30-year ban on leading anti-apartheid groups such as the African National Congress.
