  3. What is speculative? • The speculative prompt presents a brief scenario which students will use as a springboard for writing a story or drawing on stories they have read as well as on their own experiences.

  4. Speculative Example Sasha dreams of becoming a famous inventor. She writes down ideas. She hopes to invent something that will be useful. Imagine what Sasha might invent. Write a story about her invention, and how it can be used.

  5. Explanatory Prompts • Explanatory prompts present students with a topic based on a quotation, or based on a familiar subject. Each is a springboard for the student to write an essay. Explanatory writing is used to share knowledge and to convey ideas and experiences. Explanatory writing may be based on the writer’s personal knowledge and experience, or on information presented to the writer.

Explanatory Prompt Consider how the following quotation is related to you. “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” - Will Rogers (Cherokee- American, cowboy, comedian, actor) Write an essay explaining what this quotation means to you. Use details, reason, examples in your explanation.

  7. Or Explanatory can be: Life can be full of surprises. Identify a time when you experienced a pleasant surprise. Write an essay about at time when you experienced a pleasant surprise. Explain why this surprise was unexpected and how if affected your life in a positive way. Be sure to explain your choice by using details and examples.

  8. Persuasive Writing Tasks Persuasive writing tasks elicit the student’s point of view on a given controversy or topic arising from interpersonal, school , community or social contexts.

  9. Persuasive Prompt A well known musical group has offered to give a free concert at your school. There has been much debate as to when the concert should be held- during school or after school. You decide to write a letter to your principal expressing your opinion about when the concert should be held. Writing Task Write a letter to your principal supporting your position whether the concert should be during school time or held after school. Use reasons, facts, examples and or other evidence to support your position.

Things to Consider: Every piece of writing has a PURPOSE and an AUDIENCE Remember you don’t know who is reading your essay. • It could be the first one of the day. • It could be the last one read before lunch. • It could be after the best one the reader has looked at all day. • You need to be prepared to do your best no matter what.

Remember the Rubric • Content and Focus opening, closing,single focus unified, fluent, compositional risks , vivid details- explicit and pertinent) • Organization ideas clearly expressed in a sequential manner, use of transitions • Usage the way parts of speech are used to construct meaning • Sentence Structure the way the wrtier uses sentences to convey meaning ( varied sentences , no fragments or run ons) • Mechanicspunctation, spelling and capitalization

Today’s FocusExplanatory QUIET Formula QU – 1st paragraph ( Introductory paragraph) • Repeat the QUOTE • Explain what it means to you I – 2nd paragraph • Discuss how the quote relates to you as an INDIVIDUAL • Remember to start with a topic sentence E - 3rd paragraph • EXTEND (using a different idea) with another way the quote relates to you • OR discuss how it relates to EVERYONE • Remember to start with a topic sentence T – 4th paragraph ( conclusion) • Sum up your thoughts by reflecting on the lesson that can be TAUGHT • Remember to start with a topic sentence
