  4. Daimler’s Car2Go • Began in Ulm, Germany • Unique characteristics: • One-way rentals • One vehicle type • Pay by the minute • Austin operations • Began pilot: November 17, 2009 • Opened to public: May 21, 2010

  5. Successful carshares have… • Dense neighborhoods • Low vehicle ownership • Young members • Highly-educated members • High (and low) incomes • Environmentally conscious and “daring” members

  9. Response Demographics • Vehicle Ownership • Mean of 0.8 vehicles/household • ACS members: median of 0 vehicles • Travel behavior • Assumption: private vehicle travel is low

  10. Survey Results • 80% prefer one-way carsharing opportunities • “No interest in carsharing” respondents were entirely male • Most likely trip: errands • Least likely trip: work/school

  11. Current Operating Status • UT and Austin’s CBD have both proven to be strong markets • Car2Go is currently the fastest growing carsharing operation in the country • 15,000+ members and 175,000+ rentals
