  1. Mail@umd Tom Rogan

  2. What’s Good • Sends and receives e-mail • Address book • Easy to sort by time received, from, subject • Cool icons (messages I’ve replied to), turtle logo

  3. What’s Bad • No way to stay logged in – must retype password every time or save in browser • User wants to see new messages as soon as possible • No auto-refresh to display new messages • Must click “Check Mail” in upper left • But…

  4. …refreshing the page logs you out!

  5. Doesn’t speak the user’s language: Times are displayed in 24-hour time (no am or pm) To change something, do I want “Preferences” or “Options” ? No easy way to find a message Clicking “Search” on the sidebar produces… What’s Bad

  6. What does this mean??

  7. Good Way to Get Rid of Messages • How do I get rid of messages? • Option 1: With Trash folder enabled • Click checkbox next to message • Click “Delete” • Empty Trash • Obeys user expectations

  8. Bad Way to Get Rid of Messages • Option 2: With Trash folder disabled • Click checkbox next to message • Select “Deleted” from drop-down box • Click “Mark” • Click “Compact” • Defies user expectations

  9. Overall • Not very usable • Doesn’t speak the user’s language • Things aren’t visible • Inconsistent with expectations • Many other email clients get it right, so why put up with this?
