  3. How wide is our universe? 210,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles (22 zeros) This number is written in decimal notation. When numbers get this large, it is easier to write them in scientific notation.

  7. When changing scientific notation to standard notation, the exponenttells you how many places to move the decimal: With a positive exponent, move the decimal to the right: 4.08 x 103 = 4 0 8 Don’t forget to fill in your zeroes!

  13. When using Scientific Notation, there are two kinds of exponents: positive and negative Positive Exponent: 2.35 x 108 Negative Exponent: 3.97 x 10 -7

  14. Express 0.0000000902 in scientific notation. Where would the decimal go to make the number be between 1 and 10? 9.02 The decimal was moved how many places? 8 When the original number is less than 1, the exponent is negative. 9.02 x 10-8

  15. When changing scientific notation to standard notation, the exponent tells you if you should move the decimal: With a negative exponent, move the decimal to the left: 4.08 x 10-3 = 4 0 8 Don’t forget to fill in your zeroes!

  16. An easy way to remember this is: • If an exponent is positive, the number gets larger, so move the decimal to the right. • If an exponent is negative, the number gets smaller, so move the decimal to the left.
