  1. Evangelism Discipleship Matthew 28:18-20

  2. Introduction • Evangelism follows from preparation. • In Ephesians we are to shod our feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace, this does not happen without preparation – we have to put our shoes on and lace them up. • The imperative in the great commission is to make disciples.

  3. Matthew 28:16-20 (NET Bible) • "So the eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain Jesus had designated. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. Then Jesus came up and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”“

  4. Background • The disciples were instructed before and after Christ’s death to go to Galilee. (26:32; 28:7, 10). This may have included the 500 (1 Cor 15:6). • This was their hometown area, a familiar place for them. • It was not in the religious center of the world: Jerusalem. • The command was not to remain in their hometown, but to go to all nations.

  5. The known appearances • 1. To Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9; John 20:11–18). • 2. To the women (Matt. 28:9, 10). • 3. To Cleopas and his companion (Luke 24:13–35). • 4. To Simon (Luke 24:34; I Cor. 15:15). • 5. To the disciples except Thomas (John 20:19–23). • 6. To the disciples, Thomas being present (John 20:24–29). • All of these occurred in Jerusalem. After the disciples have gone to Galilee, in obedience to the instructions which they had received from the Lord, Jesus appears again: • 7. To the seven at the Sea of Tiberias (21:1–14). • 8. To the disciples on a “mountain” in Galilee, where Jesus made a great claim, gave the great commission, and proclaimed the great presence (Matt. 28:16–20). By many commentators this appearance is identified with Number 9. • 9. To the five hundred (I Cor. 15:6). • 10. To James, the Lord’s brother (I Cor. 15:7). Whether this took place in Galilee or in Judea is not stated. • The disciples having returned to Jerusalem: • 11. To the eleven on Olivet, near Jerusalem (Acts 1:4–11; cf. Luke 24:50, 51). • The next appearance that is specifically recorded is by the Lord from heaven: • 12. To Paul, when he was on his way to Damascus (Acts 9:3–7; 22:6–10; 26:12–18; I Cor. 9:1; 15:8). • There may have been several others. How many there were we do not know (cf. Acts 1:3). • Hendriksen, William, and Simon J. Kistemaker. Vol. 1-2, New Testament Commentary : Exposition of the Gospel According to John. Accompanying biblical text is author's translation. New Testament Commentary, Vol. 2, Page 477. Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1953-2001.

  6. All authority • The reference is clearly to Daniel 7:14. • "Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed." (Daniel 7:14, NKJV) • To calm and assure in times of trial. • "But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’" (Acts 26:16-18, NKJV) • Put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:11).

• "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit," (NET Bible). imperative participle participle participle imperative participle

  8. Discipleship • "Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (Matt 11:29,NET Bible) • μανθάνω [manthano /man·than·o/] the verb meaning to teach, and the noun disciple (μαθητής [mathetes /math·ay·tes/] ) are related.

  9. Bonhoeffer states that repentance "lies within the limits of human freedom." But he stresses that Peter could not achieve his own conversion, but he could leave his nets. Bonhoeffer boldly asserts "that the step of obedience must be taken before faith can be possible. Unless he obeys, a man cannot believe." He then states "only those who obey believe." So then only those who believe obey and only those who obey believe. "If the first half of the proposition stands alone, the believer is exposed to the danger of cheap grace, which is another word for damnation. If the second half stands alone, the believer is exposed to the danger of salvation through works, which is also another word for damnation." To sum up the call to discipleship in Jesus’ words “follow me." • James stated the same thing "But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” " (James 2:18, NASB95)

  10. A true disciple • "Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him, “If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples" (John 8:31, NET Bible)

  11. Go • Although it is true that the participle does not have mood in and of itself it is also true that “its modal junction will be apparent only from the context.”4 In close proximity in Matthew 28:7 the Angel tells the women to “Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you." • Nigel TurnerSyntax, Vol. III of A Grammar of New Testament Greek (Edinburgh, 1963), p. 160. For the participle and imperative, see also James Hope Moulton, Prolegomena, Vol. I of A Grammar of New Testament Greek (3rd ed; Edinburgh, 1908), pp. 180-83. Excerpted from Cleon Rogers “The Great Commission”. Bibliotheca Sacra, Vol. 130, Page 258-259, Dallas Theological Seminary, 1973; 2002.

  12. Go • because your Lord has so ordered; • because He has promised to impart all the needed strength; • because He is worthy of the homage, faith, and obedience of all men. • Hendriksen, Matthew, 999.

  13. Baptizing and Teaching • These terms are subordinate to the process of disciple making. • A disciple is one who has been baptized, and is being taught. • One must be taught in order to obey. • The outcome of the teaching should result in obedience. • Today 90% of professions in Christ results in apostasy.

  14. Summary • In the great commission the focus is on discipleship. • We are to go out from our familiar environment to all nations. • Christ is worthy of our discipleship for He is Lord.

  15. An outline for evangelism • A. Man is in dire peril, because: • B. However, God offer salvation, because: • C. To be saved you need to: • D. God guarantees this spiritual change:

  16. A. Man is in dire peril, because: • All people are sinners -- John 3:18, 20 • At death unforgiven sin separates men from God eternally -- John 3:36. • Sin brings judgment and eternal damnation – John 3:36.

  17. B. However, God offers salvation, because: • God loves all sinners and wants to save them from the consequences of their sins – John 3:16. • Jesus Christ died to save sinners, so salvation is available to all – John 3:14 -15. • Salvation is a free gift available to every person – John 3:16

  18. C. To be saved you need to: • Repent from your sins – Romans 2:5; Acts 3:19. • Turn in faith to Jesus Christ to save you – John 3:14, 16. • Undergo spiritual change – John 3:3.

  19. D. God guarantees this spiritual change: • Provided you ask Him – John 4:10. • Provided you come to Him through Jesus Christ– John 3:16, 18 • This guarantees is extended to everybody who comes to Jesus Christ – John 3:16
