  1. Possible Data Slides Students May Include in Their Presentations

  2. Problem Statement • One or a few slides • Discuss issues with nonpoint source pollution • Combined sewer overflows • Low impact development strategies • Energy and emissions associated with water use • Water scarcity around the world?? • Importance of water??

  3. Project Goals • The objective of this study was to ….

  4. Methods • As many slides as necessary

  5. Reading the Water meter • Show a photo of water meter • Discuss how water bills were obtained from the admin building

  6. Energy Associated with water use • Show a photo of the trip to water treatment plant • Introduce eio-lca??

  7. Field Measurements of water quality • Discuss how the sample was collected • Discuss how pH, DO, TDS, turbidity etc were measured • Discuss the meaning of these parameters

  8. Stormwater runoff amount calculations • Discuss how the impervious area was estimated • We should get engineering plans from someone to estimate the area • Discuss the rational equation Q=cia

  9. Results • As many slides as necessary

  10. Monthly water use • Plot potable water and wastewater use on a line or bar graph and discuss the data

  11. Implications of this Water Use • Discuss EIO-LCA • Present results from EIO-LCA

  12. Water sent to wastewater sewer (xx liters) School grounds Potable city water (xx liters) Water evaporated (xx liters) Water from rain (xx liters) Water sent to stormwater sewer (x liters Water infiltrated Xxx liters Results: Annual Water Budget for The School Ground for Year 2007 • Discuss errors and issues with data analysis

  13. Possible Savings • Discuss if any of this water can be managed in a different way • I assume one option will be to use rainwater for a beneficial purpose. If that is the case, it would help to know the quality of the rainwater. This will justify our rainwater sampling and lead the discussion into the next slides

  14. Water Quality in Runoff from School Grounds: pH • Present pH results and discuss data • Ideally, we can take three samples so we can estimate the mean and the standard deviation. If statistics is of interest to you and if we want to give kids more opportunity to sample, we can do this.

  15. Water Quality in Runoff from School Grounds: DO • Present DO results and discuss data

  16. Water Quality in Runoff from School Grounds: Conductivity • Conductivity results and discuss data

  17. Water Quality in Runoff from School Grounds: Turbidity • turbidity results and discuss data

  18. Runoff Water Quantity as Measured at Downspouts • Present current meter values??

  19. Solution Options • Discuss possible options for remediating the problem. Collecting rainwater to send it to flush toilets or to a rain garden is one option. • Planting trees on school grounds to increase interception (and thus minimize first flush) is another option • Educating students about water use is another option

  20. Sustainability • Economic implications of proposed solutions • Social implications of proposed solution • Environmental implications of proposed solution
