  1. ATOMIC BOMB By Jimmy Leary

  2. Manhattan Project • Manhattan Project was the codename given to the development of the bombs • It was the only time atomic bombs were studied for weapons rather than just research • United Kingdom and Canada both helped the United States in the research

  3. Who designed the atomic bomb? • Albert Einstein wrote Roosevelt about the Germans researching Atomic weapons and recommended they should research as well but did not directly work on the project • Enrico Fermi lead research on the atom bomb and was assisted by Leo Szilard • Although they developed the bomb, Szilard did not know it would be used and once he found out he tried to prevent it but could not.

  4. What was the bomb constructed of? • The atomic bomb Little Boy was composed of Uranium and Fat Man composed of Plutonium • For the bomb to create a considerable amount of damage there had to be enough to reach super critical mass • Supercritical mass would allow the reaction in the bomb to take place faster and exponentially

  5. Why was the atomic bomb used? • Truman factored many things into deciding to use the bomb • A bomb had been tested at Trinity first so he was aware of the damage it could do • USA had suffered over 1 million losses before the use of the bomb • The bomb was initially dropped to strike fear into the Japanese and eventually force them to surrender which it did. • The second bomb was dropped to make it seem like the USA had a huge arsenal of bombs to use • Although only rumors there is proof that Truman used the bombs to scare the Soviet Union

  6. Little Boy "We saw another sun in the sky when it exploded."- Japanese Witnesses • Little Boy was the bomb dropped on Hiroshima • It was dropped August 6, 1945 from the B-52 bomber, the Enola Gay, which was piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets • Made up of 220 lb of Uranium • Destroyed basically everything within 1.5 mile – 3mile radius • It resulted in the death of 155,000 people by impact explosion and radioactive disease

  7. Fat Man • Bomb was named Fat Man because of its appearance and as a tribute to Winston Churchill • Dropped August 9, 1945 on Nagasaki from a B-52 piloted by Charles Sweeny • Killed a total of around 100,000 people from burns, radiation, and impact blast • Unlike Little Boy, Fat Man had a 22 lb plutonium core that was surrounded by a Uranium isotope • When the bomb detonated everything would implode causing the plutonium to fuse quickly

  8. Important Quotes "I fear all we have done is awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.“ -Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto after the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor "I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.“ -Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower "We are not retreating — we are advancing in another direction." -Gen. Douglas MacArthur

  9. Japan surrendered to the US on September 2, 1945 • It was the bombing on Nagasaki that ultimately led to japans surrender • United States paid for and helped rebuild Japan after Japan surrendered
