  2. Current situation • TDX is a service that gathers ETDs from Catalan universities • TDX is an organization involving 14 participant institutions • 11 universities • 2 consortia (supercomputing and libraries) • 1 ‘national’ library

  3. Catalonia • Autonomous region of Spain, • 6,000,000 inhabitants, • Own language (Catalan), • University system of 8 public universities and 3 private ones, • University community of 172.000 students, 13.000 teaching staff and 6.000 administr. staff • National Library (Biblioteca de Catalunya).

  4. TDX: evolution • 1999: reports and early works, NDLTD membership • 2000 Oct.: server set up • 2001 Feb.: first ETD • 2002 Feb.: • 8 universities • 429 ETDs • 2003 May: • 11 universities • Nearly 1.000 ETDs

  7. TDX: initial objectives • Putting content on the Internet • Strengthening libraries’ role in scholarly communication processes • Doing it inside an international project (NDLTD)

  9. 2000: main problems • Disagreement at universities between different departments • Lack of information for the main players: the authors • Lots of “good” reasons to change not the current status quo

  11. Complementariness • Common TDX Intranet built from participant universities’ information • In order to: • Share procedures • Share forms • Share contracts • Share promotion tools • Dispel uncertainties

  20. The future • Extending TDX to the rest of Catalan universities • Including all (or nearly all) current theses in TDX • Promoting TDX as the embryo of an institutional repository for Catalan universities • Including (some) old (print) theses and dissertations
