Status Report on the PS and SPS experiments • 6. Status of ICARUS: W. Kühn (and A. Zalewska) Report from SPSC meeting 05/09/2000Closed session ... the Research Board requested the SPSC to review, at its 5 September 2000 meeting, all the fixed-target experimental proposals which are still pending and therefore still not included in the current Medium Term Plan. This review should include competition from other experiments world-wide, and conclude by establishing scientific priorities for the period 2001 to 2005. It should be presented to the Research Board at its 14 September 2000 meeting, at which time a parallel review by the management of the resources that these proposals request from CERN (finances, man power,...) will also be presented. … - Comments from the Chairman & C. Détraz Running at 400 GeV/c;Very good SPS efficiency this year : 90 % PS Intensity record; AD status & physics start; News from RFQ-D being tested in Aarhus DIRAC benefits from AD spare cycles; AD Experiments are running; Good results from ASACUSA & ATRAP; ATHENA progressing well - A first 20 m long track from T600 should be seen early next year; - Congratulations of the SPSC for the impressive progress over last year.;

Memorandum from MONOLITH • SPSC 2000-031 - Data taking expected in 2005; 18 events expected in 5 years ; Cost 83 MSF; Collaboration not strong enough ; - SPSC asks for clear definition of responsibility, definition of SW organisation and a long list of technical items. Report from SPSC meeting 23/05/2000 Closed session (Ct’d) - Proposal to measure pK life time in 2003-2005 - SPSC recommends approval for 2003, provided existence of pK atoms is shown - Extension of NA48, after installation in 2002-3 shut-down - With NA48 CERN can bring important and unique data to CP violation. SPSC: low cost & natural extension of NA48. Extension recommended for approval - Proposal to run at 80 A.GeV/c (6days) in 2000. - This year’s request recommended for approval - Request for 15 days at 20 & 30 A.GeV/c in 2002. To be decided at next SPSC - Request for Indium run in 2002 and Pb run in 2003 - Position of runs still to be decided - SPSC comments : Physics is clear; should be done; Recommended for approval - Why PS beam ? - It’s a research programme, not an experiment - Not recommended for approval - 2001 schedule recommended for approval

  4. Physics starts: 2 April East Hall, AD, ISOLDE, nTOF Physics stops: 29 October 28 weeks for East Hall (29 weeks in 2000) 3000 h for AD Supercycle length: 16.8 sec Informal meeting on July 7th with users about distribution of proton cycles between East Hall, PS and SPS/MD, ISOLDE and nTOF. Possible scenarios send to users on August 2nd. Efficient use of beam time requires close collaboration between the PS and ISOLDE coordinators. Expecting detailed user requests until end of October.
