  1. Curriculum CBIA offers unique courses of study adapted for middle level learners.

  2. Our curriculum is… Integrated

  3. Integrated • Our integrated curriculum connects the different areas of study through unit themes. • The teachers on each team work together to decide on themes and culminating events that utilize the standards taught by each teacher during the unit. • The teachers individually create lesson plans from their standards based on the central topic. • Why integrate curriculum? • This step-by-step learning process, beginning with a problem/issue and ending with a solution, requires the students’ application of knowledge rather than just memorization of facts. • Our brains naturally look for these types of connections and build upon them. • (TIMS pg. 107-109)

  4. Our curriculum is… Integrated Exploratory

  5. Exploratory • Our exploratory curriculum allows students to discover new ideas on their own. • The teachers act as supervisors in this setting, with the students leading the activities. • The students are still learning the necessary material, but they are able to guide how they are learning. • Why exploratory? • It is important for young adolescents to get a chance to explore their interests, especially within academics. • Letting students at this age discover their interests goes a long way in helping them decide their future goals. • (TIMS pg. 120)

  6. Our curriculum is… Integrated Exploratory Relevant

  7. Relevant • Our curriculum is relevant to our students. • We make connections to the students’ real lives from the classroom. • The students can see how what they are learning in school is applicable in their everyday lives. • Why relevant? • Students at this age are naturally curious about a lot of things. Our curriculum is set up to help answer the questions they already have. • This helps them to see the importance of the knowledge we are trying to teach them. • (TWB pg. 22)

  8. Examples • What are some examples that portray our integrated, exploratory, and relevant curriculum? • Each term our students will have two projects that will connect their content areas, let them discover new things, and be significant to their everyday lives. The first two units/projects will be… • …a unit centered around the tropical storms that devastated the Filipino Islands, and raising money at a bake sale to send over there. • …a unit centered around all the elements essential to sports, and ending with the students creating their own sport.
