  1. Amazing Changing Matter Write down the stuff in gold

  2. What is Matter? • Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass • Matter is made of tiny particles

  3. Everybody knows that matter comes in 3 basic flavors • SOLID • LIQUID • GAS

  4. What are solids like? • Solids have a definite shape • Solids have a definite volume • Examples:

  5. What are liquids like? • Liquids can change shape • Liquids have a definite volume • Examples:

  6. What are gasses like? Demonstration 1 Move an empty plastic bag through the air and “catch some”. Tie off the bag, then squeeze it with your hand. Make an observation: what is air like – does it have a definite shape? Write your observations and answer the above question.

  7. What are gasses like? • Gasses have volume (they take up space) • Gasses do not have a definite shape

  8. What are gasses like? Demonstration 2 Fill a large beaker ½ full with water. Wad a small paper towel and push it to the bottom of a mini-beaker. Turn the cup upside down and push it vertically into the water in the large beaker. Hold for 10 seconds then remove the mini-beaker and examine the paper towel. Make an observation: Can solid, liquid, or gasses be in the same space at the same time?

  9. What are gasses like? • Two pieces of matter cannot occupy the same space at the same time.

  10. What are gasses like? Demonstration 3 Measure the mass of an empty balloon. Blow air into the balloon then measure the air and the balloon together. Make an observation: what is air like – does it have mass? Write your observations and answer the above question.

  11. What are gasses like? • Gasses have mass (weight)

  12. What are gasses like? Demonstration 3 Make an observation: what is air like – does it have mass? Write your observations and answer the above question.

  13. What makes stuff change from one form to another?

  14. What are gasses like? Demonstration 3 Measure the mass of an empty balloon. Blow air into the balloon then measure the air and the balloon together. Make an observation: what is air like – does it have mass? Write your observations and answer the above question.
