  2. Podcasting: Introduction • General Information • Podcasting is a phenomenon that has revolutionized the way people receive, report, and analyze current events. Listening to Podcasts is generally free - all it requires is a computer with speakers and an internet connection. Certain programs need to be used - these are referred to as podcast catchers and include programs like Apple's Itunes, Microsofts Zune Marketplace and many many others. These programs allow users to pick and choose what podcastst they want to download.

  3. Podcasting: Introduction • Overview • Podcasting is a way of broadcasting media files, usually audio, over the internet using RSS feeds. Podcasts can be accessed on computers and are popularly listened to on MP3 players. The term “podcasting” got its name from combining “iPod” and “Broadcasting”. • Features/Functions • Podcasting can be used as a tool for teachers to record their lectures, or stories for younger students, and present them to the students. • Podcasting can be used as a way to keep parents involved and learning about the classroom. • By using podcasts in the classroom, students can improve their language skills as well as their writing skills.

  4. Podcasting in the Classroom • Activity Overview • Learning to read is an essential skill that is taught and practiced within the curriculum of the primary grades. In order to promote the growth of comprehension, vocabulary, and literacy skills, reading should be practiced both in and out of the classroom setting. A fun and unique way to integrate technology into our classrooms is to record ourselves reading a series of stories on Podcasts so that our students will be able to follow along with us as they learn to create sight and sound recognition with new, unfamiliar words. We also hope to ask them questions along the way in order to stimulate their thinking processes and levels of comprehension.

  5. Podcating in the Classroom • Activity • Students will select a book of their choice from a designated list of easy reads that are all options on the podcast website. • At home, the student will then locate the podcast on the internet that corresponds to the book that was chosen by the student as stated in procedure number one. • As the student begins to read the book along with the background sound of my voice, parents or an older sibling should observe the reaction(s) of the student as he or she engages with the sound of my voice versus that of another reader’s voice on a different podcast. • Students will then complete an assessment about his or her comprehension of the story based on listening to it via podcast. • Finally, each student will attempt to read along (orally) with me as the podcast is replayed for the student’s benefit. • For fun, students will record their own podcast of themselves reading the same story so that, in turn, they will be able to listen to themselves reading. This is a great technique that will promote read-aloud skills for the personal benefit of the student.
