  2. Study Area N

  3. Problem • The twin Highway 401 Cornwall Centre Road overpass bridges were constructed in the early 1960’s. • These bridges have service lives of 50 - 70 years. • The bridges have reached the end of their service life and will need to be rehabilitated or reconstructed. • Temporary measures have been implemented by MTO as a safety precaution.

  7. Technically Preferred Plan Alternative 1A’: Two open-footing concrete rigid frame bridges and retaining walls; 2 lanes of traffic in each direction maintained on Highway 401; north side detour within MTO right-of-way using retaining walls; Cornwall Centre Road closed during construction. 8. Traffic Recommendations for Staging of Preferred Alternative Temporary Ramp Closure/ Redirect movements to adjacent ramp Add southbound left turn lane Add temporary traffic signals • Highway 401 Work Zone • 2 Lanes/Direction • 80 km/h Temporary Road Closures (2)

  9. Traffic Recommendations for Staging of Preferred Alternative – Detour Route • All roads assigned to detour route are designated as arterial roads in the City of Cornwall Official Plan. • Temporary closure of Cornwall Centre Road for two years. Preliminary Detour Route

  10. Recommended Plan • The study team recommends Alternative 1A’ as the preferred alternative. • The plan includes: • Two open-footing rigid frame bridges to carry Highway 401 traffic over Cornwall Centre Road; • 2-stage construction maintaining 2 lanes of Highway 401 traffic in each direction; • Highway 401 detour through the construction zone constructed north of existing alignment within MTO right-of-way; • New bridge includes provisions for pedestrians and cyclists on Cornwall Centre Road; • Temporary closure of the north to west Highway 401 on-ramp. • Temporary signals at the Brookdale Avenue interchange north ramp terminal and a left turn lane; and • Temporary closure of Cornwall Centre Road for two years.

  11. Next Steps • Following this meeting we will: • Review all comments from the public and agencies; • Consider comments received; • Conduct briefing meetings with affected external agencies, interest groups and property owners; • Prepare a Recommended Plan; • Present recommendations to Township of South Stormont and City of Cornwall; and • Upon completion of the study, a Transportation Environmental Study Report will be available for a 30 -day public review and comment. Notices will be published at that time.
