  2. Goal for today Broaden, shape or re-shape our understanding of professional development (PD) as a self-directed activity.

  3. Processes • Get to know each other a bit more • Tent cards • Get to know ourselves a bit more • Explore professional development as it relates to our individual circumstances • Begin to build a PD plan

  22. Main activities involved in PD • Knowing • What you already know • What you need to know • What resources are required • What resources can be accessed easily

Increasing your chances of success • Share your plan with several people (partner, colleagues, supervisors) • Whenever possible articulate how your plan supports the long term plans of others • Coaching and on-going systematic support are required for the transfer of learning to daily practice. • Is your plan realistic? • Evaluate your progress honestly – record successes and setbacks • Forgive yourself for ‘getting off track’ – reflect on your challenges, adjust and carry on. • Maintain some semblance of balance in your life.( rarely is everything in perfect balance. Tip the scale occasionally! • Reward yourself for reaching a milestone in your plan. • Take ownership of your plan
