  3. Skill #1 Pick up a rat properly

  7. Skill #5 Demonstrate the administration of oral medication using a blunt end needle.

  8. Skill #6 Take a blood sample from the lateral tail vein of a rat.

  9. Skill #7 Determine the sex of a rat. Because this rat was mature, it was easy to identify it as an intact male. If it were a juvenile rat, I could identify the sex by genital distance. Females have a larger distance between genitals than males.

  10. Skill #8 Anesthetize a rat by gas anesthetic. I used isoflorane to sedate this rat. I started the gas on 4% and once the rat was sedate, switched to a smaller mask* that only covered his nose and decreased the gas to 1.5%. I monitored him during anesthesia and changed depth as needed. * The smaller mask is apparent in the lower right hand corner
