  3. TRANSFORM Goal & Approach • GOAL: to increase and centralize educational and career development programs across CUMC by recruiting, training, and supporting the next generation of clinical/translational investigators who will work effectively in multi/interdisciplinary teams. • TRANSFORM Approach: • MS/POR track (formerly funded by the K30) • K12 Career Development Program • T32 Clinical/Translational Certificate program • T32 PhD in Patient Oriented Research

  4. MS/POR Program • Purpose: to train a new generation of investigators in multi/interdisciplinary research methods • Accomplishments: • Application to University Senate to establish a new degree : MS in POR • Re-evaluation of curriculum, with increased emphasis on multi/interdisciplinarity in research • BMIR/CTSA colleagues (S Bakken, E Larson) undertake an innovative project to develop e-portfolios for trainees and scholars • Review and select incoming class of POR Scholars (Class of 2009)

  5. K12 Program • Purpose: to support the career development of clinical and translational investigators with an emphasis on multi/interdisciplinary research • Accomplishments: • Solicited first round of applications from CUMC community in November 2006 • Assembled review committee of 15 members • Received 35 Letters of Intent, resulting in 27 completed applications and 5 new awards (January 2007) • Solicited applications for May 1st deadline and will award 4-5 more slots • K12 scholars have joined DNMR faculty and Irving fellows as “change agents”

  6. T32 Certificate Program • Purpose: to provide structured training and practical exposure to clinical or translational research for current PhD students (with clinical ↔ translational “cross-over” ) • Accomplishments: • Award announced across all schools • 5 awards made as of January 2007 • Established faculty review system • Five more will be awarded for June 2007

  7. T32 PhD Proposal • Purpose: to encourage novel methods and approaches for providing an integrated and flexible research education • Accomplishments: • Oversight committee assembled • Initial curriculum and degree requirements in development • Will work with university administration to submit forms for degree application

  8. Issues For Consideration • PhD program eligibility – post-MD? • How do we assess trainees impact on Columbia? • How do we have the most impact on clinical research leadership with only 5 predoc slots? • How do we influence NIH harmonization for K12 transition to extramural K awards?
