  5. Course synopsis The course is tailored to give students a broad introduction to material properties and limitations. The subject will cover fundamental material structure, class of material properties, measurement of the properties, and knowledge to make material selection with better properties. The common micro-structural features of different material classes will be outlined in order to relate material with its characteristics.

  6. Learning Outcomes At the end of the course, students are expected to be: • CO1: • Ability to compare types of material families (metal, polymer, ceramic, and composite) and describe material structure. • CO2: • Ability to analyze, calculate, and compare various material characteristic and properties such as mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties. • CO3: • Ability to analyze material reliability in terms of material life cycle, oxidation and corrosion mechanism.

  7. Credit hours : 3 • Contact hours: 3 hours (L) and 1 hours (T)per week • Lecture : 42 hours per semester • Tutorial : 14 hours per semester

  8. Evaluation contribution • Peperiksaan/ Examination : 70 % • Mid Term Examination 1 = 10 % • Mid Term Examination 2 = 10 % • Final Examination = 50 % • Penilaianberterusan / Continual assessment : 30 % • Activities (reports & in class) = 5 % • Quizzes = 5 % • Assignments = 20 %

  9. Evaluation At least 3 Quizzes (5%) Activities / Viva (5%) Assignments (20%) Midterm Test 1: Week 7 (10%) Midterm Test 2: Week 15 (10%) Final Exam (50%)

  10. Assignments • Assignment 1 (5%): • Proposal of Student Centered Learning (SCL) project • Assignment 2 (5%) • Assignment 3 (10%): Final Report for SCL project

  12. Important Informations Attendance should not less than 80%, or else you will be barred from taking final examination. Plagiarism and copying other students’ work is strictly prohibited especially in doing assignments and lab reports, or else both parties will get zero. Cheating in quizzes and examination is also prohibited, or else both parties will get zero. Therefore, study hard and smart. Take note of the important chapters or things that will be highlighted throughout lectures.

  13. READING SCHEDULE • Reading schedule is based on the syllabus. • Read the learning topic before joining in the class. • For example: • Next week (2nd) • Reading assignment: Atomic Structures • Pop-up quiz on the reading assignment
