  1. DARTMOUTH COLLEGE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ATHLETIC TRAINING FACILITIES September 13, 2006

  2. DCAD currently has eight locations that are described as “athletic training facilities”, distributed as follows among its various athletic venues Excludes visits by Club Sports Athletes (other than Rugby), other Students, Faculty and Staff totaling roughly 150 visits annually DCAD’s Athletic Training Facilities If the limited-use training facilities in Berry, Leverone and the Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse are eliminated from this list, Dartmouth’s total falls to five, and its aggregate square footage declines to 1,961….. 1

  3. Although DCAD has more athletic training facilities than any of its Ivy League peers, its amount of square footage devoted to athletic medicine is significantly less…. Issues Regarding Confidentiality of Records and Conversations Ivy League Peer Comparison - Athletic Training Facilities Numbers Exclude Part-Time Trainers Dartmouth’s disbursed athletic training facilities are convenient for its athletes, particularly at practice and game times, but the number of separate locations make the efficient allocation of both equipment and staff very difficult…. 2

  4. DCAD’s athletic training facilities operate from mid-August to the end of May, and each serves multiple teams throughout the year… The Athletic Trainers also serve Club Sports Athletes, other Students, Faculty and Staff Athletic Training Facilities – Assigned Teams Size or Location Limits Use Location Limits Use to Rugby Only Issues with Size and Location “Out of season” practices and “non-traditional seasons” have increased in the Ivy League since the ’80’s, along with year-round weight training… The volume of athletes serviced and injuries treated has increased commensurately 3

  5. DCAD’s Varsity teams are active both in-season and out… In addition, all of the College’s Varsity teams participate in some form of year-round, formal strength training or conditioning program… Varsity Athletic Teams - Annual Schedules The football team is the “heaviest user” of athletic training facilities overall…. But in terms of visits per athlete, Women’s Basketball heads the list… Field Hockey and Women’s Lacrosse also make the “top five”… 4

  6. The ten teams that are the “heaviest users” of DCAD’s athletic training facilities ranked by visits per athlete use 72.3% of all athletic training services… Varsity Athletic Teams – Training Facilities Usage Yellow = Women’s Blue = Men’s Green = CoEd The ten “heaviest user” teams by visits per athlete represent 30.7% of all athletes and are evenly divided between Men’s and Women’s teams… but the number of male athletes in this group is twice the number of female athletes…

  7. The new football athletic training facility in the Second Varsity House will… and the proposed additional athletic training facility in the new Soccer Facility would… significantly improve the delivery of services to students and resource use… Potential Reallocation of DCAD’s Athletic Training Resources Lacrosse, Soccer and Field Hockey move to the Soccer Facility Davis Varsity House will, however, continue to be “pressured” as DCAD’s primary athletic training facility….A modest increase in its size - +/- 500 Ft.2 - will further significantly improve the delivery of athletic training services at Dartmouth Day-to-day Football training moves to the Second Varsity House. Tennis moves to the Soccer Facility Under this configuration, no teams would be assigned to the athletic training rooms in Berry, Boss and Leverone – which will become game-time First Aid/Prep Rooms With the addition of new – and larger - athletic training facilities in the Second Varsity House and the Soccer Facility, some “heavy user” teams will be able to be reallocated to achieve a more efficient allocation of equipment and staff… 5

  8. The athletic training facilities in Berry, Boss/Gordon and Leverone will become game-time First Aid and Prep Rooms because either their size, location or facilities are inadequate for continued full-time athletic training use by designated teams…. Berry Men’s 80 Square Ft. Leverone 286 Square Ft. Limited Facilities Berry Women’s 80 Square Ft. Boss/Gordon 240 Square Ft. Location Limited Facilities 6

  9. The new athletic training facilities in the Second Varsity House and the Soccer Facility will allow better distribution of student demand… and will concentrate demand in the larger, newer, more efficient facilities… Excludes roughly 150 annual visits by Club Sports Athletes (other than Rugby), other Students, Faculty and Staff Estimated Programmatic Impact of New Training Facilities Primary Facility Second Tier Facilities Third Tier Facilities The new facilities will decrease the current load on Davis Varsity House, DCAD’s primary athletic training facility, but additional space will continue to be needed… 7

  10. The new athletic training facilities in the Second Varsity House… and the proposed additional athletic training facility in the new Soccer Facility… will also improve Dartmouth’s ranking among its Ivy League peers… Ivy League Peer Comparison - Athletic Training Facilities Despite this improvement in Dartmouth’s athletic training facilities, however, Davis Varsity House will continue to need a expansion of +/- 500 Ft.2 to achieve the programmatic, equipment, staff and service efficiencies associated with a large, primary training facility…. 8
