  3. Using Drama to Build Literacy • Drama creates interest and motivation • Explore the roles of character • See themselves in a new light • Drama encourages scaffolding • Develops decoding knowledge through drama • Develops vocabulary through drama

Reader’s Theatre • English Language Learners can benefit from having opportunities to read a text many times because this helps them develop fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. • Reader’s Theatre gets students thinking about the character’s in a focused way. • Evaluated based on: Volume, Clarity, Expression, Posture, Eye Contact • Self-confidence

Teaching Artist Project • Across the US, students who are still developing proficiency in English comprise a large and growing subpopulation. • English Language Learners have unique learning needs. • This project demonstrates strategies for teaching literacy and social skills through drama and dance. • Various lesson plans for Kindergarten, 1st , an 2nd grade. • http://sites.uci.edu/class/

American Place Theatre • Present professionally staged adaptations of significant American literary works. • Gives students a new form of access to literature by bringing it to life. • 400.000 students national wide • Enhance students engagement during the learning process and their achievement in standard-based units of study
