  2. ‘Ōhi‘a lehua… • Hawaiian name is ‘Ōhi‘a lehua • Scientific name is Metrosideros • In the ecosystem it helps out because it’s red blossoms are an important nectar for native hawaiian birds

  3. ‘Ōhi‘a lehua… [cont’d] • Also has REALLY strong wood that helps out the ecosystem • One of the first trees to break through the lava and lava rock

  4. Nene… • The Hawaiian name for the native goose is the Nene • It’s scientific name is Nesochen sandvicensis • In the ecosystem it eats grass and low lying plant material • It is endemic to Hawaii

  5. Nene… [cont’d.] • World’s rarest goose • Its strong toes have much reduced webbing, an adaptation to the lava flows on which it breeds. It mates on land unlike most other wildfowl and also breeds well in captivity • Got it’s name form it’s soft call • Does not migrate

  6. Hawaiian Monk Seal… • Hawaiian name is Ilio holo I ka uaua • Scientific name is Monachus schauinslandi • In the ecosystem it helps by eating eels, small octopus and reef fish
